   Consider this, you buy Brand X, but you soon discover that the video card, which is built into your motherboard and shares RAM with your memory, isn't advanced enough to play your favorite (half life), (unreal tornament) game. You decide to buy a Geforce video card only to discover that the on-board video card can't be disabled and won't allow your $295.00 investment to operate. Or let's say the sound card breaks - same thing, even though the sound doesn't work, the system still sees the built-in components and doesn't allow your new Sound Blaster Live! to replace it. Then let's say you need to add a second network card, you're out of expansion slots because the motherboard maker didn't think you'd ever need any because all the options are built-in!
